U.S. looking to send another Patriot system to Ukraine, Europe also looking at options

The United States is considering providing Ukraine with another Patriot air defense system to strengthen Ukrainian air defense, Bloomberg reported on May 15, citing informed sources.

The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is working to send an additional battery of Patriot air defense system to Ukraine. The U.S. and its allies are trying to meet the country's demand for additional air defense equipment to repel increased Russian attacks.

The U.S. wants to send one battery along with the radars, sources said.

Ukraine's European allies are also working on plans to send Kyiv additional air defense systems from their stockpiles, Bloomberg's sources added.

The Patriot battery consists of radars and command stations to detect, track and target enemy weapons, missile launchers and support vehicles.

Funding for the new Patriot system is likely to come from the $61 billion aid package recently approved by Congress, Bloomberg added.

U.S. aid to Ukraine

After months of delay, the U.S. House of Representatives finally passed a bill providing over $60 billion in support for Ukraine on April 20.

The U.S. Senate also passed the Ukraine aid bill on April 24.

U.S. President Joe Biden signed the bill the same day, adding that deliveries would begin "immediately, within hours."

The aid package includes ammunition for air defense systems, artillery, missile systems, and armored vehicles, he added.

The new aid package for Ukraine should last until the end of 2024, the White House stated.

The U.S. had secretly sent over 100 long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine in March, The New York Times reported.
