JOPLIN, Mo. — Thursday marks a grim anniversary in the death of a Joplin man.

It’s now been two years since the death of Kenneth Jay Mathews. On May 16, 2022 he was walking with a friend in the 400 block of S. Connor Ave. when someone opened fire on them.

Mathews was shot multiple times and died at the scene, while his friend was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

In the two years since, Joplin police have followed up on more than 60 leads and are still seeking any new details. The only information released pointed to a “dark colored passenger vehicle” as the getaway car.

If you know anything about the killing, you can contact JPD at 417-623-3131, extension 1885.
