Two Ukrainians killed by a Russian in Germany were soldiers there for rehabilitation - Foreign Ministry
Two Ukrainians who were brutally stabbed to death on April 27 in the German city of Murnau am Staffelsee served in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry confirmed.
"Preliminary reports showed that the killed were Ukrainian soldiers undergoing medical rehabilitation in Germany,” Ukraine’s FM statement said.
“Ukrainian consuls are clarifying information about the military units where the deceased served, and establishing contact with their relatives."
The killed men, born in 1987 and 2001, died as a result of stab wounds in the local shopping center.
“The Garmisch-Partenkirchen district’s police detained a 57-year-old Russian citizen on suspicion of double homicide,” Ukraine’s General Consulate in Munich reported.
“The investigation is currently underway."
Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba instructed the FM’s Consular Service Department Ministry and the Consulate General in Munich to keep the case under special control and to work with German law enforcement so that the murderer was punished to the greatest extent of the law.
Kuleba expressed his gratitude to the German law enforcement officers for the prompt arrest of the suspect.
The two slain soldiers were undergoing rehabilitation, MP Oleksiy Honcharenko reported earlier.
The two were found with stab wounds on the grounds of a shopping center in Murnau on the evening of April 27. The 36-year-old man died on the spot from severe injuries, and the second victim died in the hospital.
"As part of an immediate search, a 57-year-old suspect was found and arrested that evening at his home address near the crime scene. The suspect is a Russian citizen," the German police said.
