Two students in Concord University’s “Upward Bound” program win scholarships

ATHENS, WV (WVNS) – Two high school students participating in Concord University’s “Upward Bound” program were recently recognized at the state level.

Upward Bound, is a nationwide pre-college program set up through colleges and universities to help high schoolers access and succeed in higher education.

Concord University has 150 students participating in their program this year, and sent 18 of those students to the 23rd annual West Virginia TRIO Annual Student Leadership Conference, held March 2nd.

Two of those students, Stephanie Rice and Nathan Tickle were recognized for their participation, and were awarded the Dr. Anne Crum Student Leadership Award Scholarship.

Jacob Abrams Chief Organizational Development and Success Officer at Concord University shares the qualities that made the high schoolers stand out.

“At that leadership conference, the students who demonstrate exceptional ability and things like leadership skills, team building, communication, the counselors at that conference select them for this particular award,” said Abrams. “We’re really excited that both of our students receive that. They’re exceptional, exceptional young men and women, and we’re really incredibly proud of them and proud of what they’re accomplishing already.”
