One dead, one injured in southwest Columbus crash where one car caught fire

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — One person is dead and another is seriously injured after a two-car crash Tuesday afternoon in southwest Columbus.

A police dispatcher said the crash occurred just before 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of South Highland Avenue and West Mound Street in the South Central Hilltop area.

According to Columbus police, a Hyundai Sonata and a Lincoln MKC were traveling east on Mound Street when they crashed into each other. Columbus Fire Batallion Chief Jeffrey Geitter said one of the cars caught on fire.

One person had to be pulled out from the burning car and was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. That victim, later identified as 14-year-old Haleigh Abshire, was pronounced dead at 1:01 p.m., according to a police dispatcher. A second juvenile was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said other unidentified people fled the scene of the crash.
