Two Rochester police officers struck by suspected drunk driver

Two Rochester police officers were injured after they were struck by an alleged drunk driver on Jay Street on Sunday evening.

The Rochester Police Department patrol car was one of two vehicles struck by a speeding southbound vehicle at 6:35 p.m., said Rochester Police Lt. Dave Williams.

As the marked patrol car traveled east on Jay Street, it was struck by a southbound vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Walnut Street. The southbound vehicle struck the patrol car and a second vehicle at the intersection after allegedly failing to stop at a posted stop sign, Williams said.

The driver of the southbound vehicle - a 22-year-old Rochester man - was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, he said.

Both officers in the patrol car suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to police.

The crash was the second collision involving a Rochester police officer in a patrol car on Sunday. An officer in a marked patrol car was injured when struck by an oncoming Jeep at Lyell and Dewey avenues around 3:45 a.m. Sunday. The officer suffered minor injuries in the early morning crash. The driver of the second vehicle - a woman in her 30s, was also charged with driving while intoxicated.
