Two Pompano Beach nursing home residents have died from coronavirus. More are sick.

Two residents of one Pompano Beach nursing home have died from the coronavirus.

And five more residents of The Court at Palm Aire have tested positive and are in the hospital, according to a letter the management of the senior living community sent to residents and their families on Monday.

“Each and every resident of our community is a valued member of our Court of Palm Aire family, and our hearts go out to their families and loved ones during this difficult time,” said the letter, obtained by the Miami Herald. “Our residents, their family members and our team members in the community have been informed.”

The residents who passed away were not identified and it was not clear when they died, but the letter, signed by Palm Aire executive director Manuela Gironelle, said they had been hospitalized on April 7.

Which elder-care facilities have COVID-19? Florida won’t say, filling families with dread

Six residents were hospitalized last week after showing signs of COVID-19, the letter said. All but one tested positive.

The Court at Palm Aire, 2701 N. Course Drive, is a 60-bed facility that has a four-star rating from Medicare.

Ellen Burr, whose mother lives at the facility, said she has been troubled by the screening protocols at the home. Without widespread testing, she said, employees could be spreading the virus without anyone knowing it until it’s too late.

“Even though they’re taking temperatures, it doesn’t do anything if they are asymptomatic,” Burr said.

The Herald’s attempts to talk to anyone with Palm Aire management were unsuccessful.
