Two killed in suspected drunk driving crash on Highway 160 in Sacramento Delta identified

Two people died early Saturday in a suspected drunk driving crash in which two vehicles collided head-on along Highway 160 in Sacramento County.

The head-on crash was reported about 12:15 a.m. on Highway 160 at Sherman Island Road, said Officer Mark Leavitt, a spokesman for the CHP’s South Sacramento office.

A man was driving a gray 2001 Nissan SUV south on Highway 160 at an unknown speed, and another man was driving a silver 2004 Lexus SUV north on the highway just south of Sherman Island Road at an unknown speed.

Leavitt said the Nissan — for an unknown reason — crossed into the northbound lane and struck the front end of the Lexus.

The Nissan driver suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Leavitt said a 33-year-old man driving the Lexus suffered major injuries in the crash and was taken to an East Bay hospital.

A woman who was a passenger in the front seat of the Lexus also died in the crash, Leavitt said, and a 2-month-old girl, a 5-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy in the rear seats suffered major injuries in the crash. He said the two girls were taken by ambulance to a Bay Area hospital and the boy was taken to a Sacramento hospital.

John Patrick Malley, 26, of Antioch and Jessica Lee Hay, 29, of Rio Vista were identified as the two people who died, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office confirmed Monday. Malley was the Nissan’s driver, and Hay was one of the passengers in the Lexus.

CHP investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the fatal crash, Leavitt said. Vehicle traffic was stopped in both directions for about an hour on Highway 160 as authorities investigated at the scene.
