Two people killed in four-vehicle accident in southern Illinois community

Two people were killed Wednesday in a four-vehicle accident along Illinois 37 in West Frankfort, north of Marion, in Franklin County, according to Illinois State Police.

State police said the two victims were in the same car, a Hyundai Elantra.

One was the 37-year-old driver from Carbondale, and the other was a 28-year-old passenger from West Frankfort, according to a news release. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger in the Elantra was taken to an area hospital. Their names were not released pending notification of their families.

The accident happened at 10:43 a.m. on Illinois 37 near Country Club Road, the release said.

The Elantra was traveling north on Illinois 37 when it slowed to make a left turn. A truck that state police say failed to slow down struck the rear of the Elantra, forcing the car into the path of two other vehicles traveling south. The driver and passenger in one of the two vehicles were injured and taken to a hospital, according to the release.

Illinois 37 was closed for about four hours in both directions after the accident, which remains under investigation, state police said in the release.
