Two people injured after charter bus crashes on I-91 in North Haven trying to avoid animal

Two people were injured when a charter bus crashed on Interstate 91 in North Haven Tuesday morning and drove off the highway into a marshy area as the driver was reportedly trying to avoid hitting an animal.

The crash occurred shortly before 4 a.m. on I-91 South just before Exit 8, according to Connecticut State Police.

State police said the driver veered off the right side of the road about 700 feet into an embankment and marshy area off the highway. The driver was issued an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane, according to state police.

State police said two people suffered what were suspected to be minor injuries and were taken to Yale New Haven Hospital.

The right shoulder of I-91 South was closed throughout the morning, according to the state Department of Transportation.

A spokesperson for the bus company, Urban Express Charter, said initial reports indicated the driver veered off the road while trying to avoid hitting a large animal. The bus had 19 people on board and was heading from Boston to New York City.

According to the bus company, another bus responded to the scene to get the passengers to their destination.

The bus involved in the crash had to be towed, state police said.
