2 Tehachapi motorcyclists killed in Kern River Canyon crash

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Two people from Tehachapi are dead after their motorcycle went down a 50-foot embankment in the Kern River Canyon Sunday afternoon, according to California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers said a man driving a Harley Davidson, with a woman passenger, were traveling westbound on Highway 178 just west of mile post marker 24, when he made an unsafe turn. The sudden movement caused the motorcyclist to lose control and left the roadway. The motorcycle went down a steep embankment and overturned.

Fire crews had to go approximately 50 feet down into the canyon near mile markers 23 and 24 to reach the motorcyclists.

The 77-year-old man and 75-year-old woman, were ejected from the motorcycle and sustained major injuries. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say alcohol and or drugs seem to be factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
