Two people charged in Ashe County after chase goes 50 mph over speed limit: Sheriff

ASHE COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Two people have been arrested for being found with drugs after leading deputies on a chase that exceeded the speed limit by more than 50 mph, according to the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office.

In the early morning of hours of April 27, Sgt. Daniel Cox was patrolling when he saw a vehicle speeding.

The driver increased their speed to more than 50 mph over the speed limit and didn’t stop when Cox initiated his blue lights and sirens, officials said. The vehicle came to a sudden stop on Highway 163 and two people were arrested by deputies.

K9s searched the vehicle and found methamphetamine, marijuana and several items of drug paraphernalia.

Sarah Elizabeth Caldera, 25, was booked into the Ashe County Detention Center under a $40,000 secured bond for the charges of:

  • 2 counts of felony flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle

  • Felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance

  • Felony possession of marijuana

  • Failure to heed to lights and siren

  • Speeding

  • Driving while license revoked and not impaired

  • Simple possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance

  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Teen won’t be charged for shooting, killing trespasser in Lancaster County: Sheriff

Derrick Scott Whisnant, 30, was booked into the Ashe County Detention Center under a $30,000 secured bond for the charges of:

  • Felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance

  • Felony possession of marijuana

  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Officials say more charges could be pressed depending on the outcome of additional evidence that was submitted to the NC State Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab.
