Two more men have been arrested in connection with a suspected burglary that resulted in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old suspect.

Marcus Smith died from gunshot wounds inside an isolated farm property at Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, at around 1.20am on Wednesday.

A man in his 50s, understood to be the farm owner, was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and remains in police custody.

Officers have been granted further time to question the man in connection with the murder.

Following the shooting, a second man, who is in his teens, was found in the road nearby suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was taken to hospital, where he remains. He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

A third suspect was also arrested on suspicion of the same offence after being stopped by police in a vehicle on the A6, near Chapel-en-le-Frith, several hours later.

On Thursday night, another man, who is in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary. He remains in police custody.

Another man, who is in his late teens, was arrested on Friday on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Following the incident at the farm, Derbyshire Police confirmed that it had received reports of a burglary at the same Eccles Road property on Tuesday, at around 3.30pm.

Officers said they were keeping an open mind as to whether the two incidents were linked.

Chief Supt Dave Kirby, of Derbyshire Police, said he believed the second incident had been a “targeted attack” and that there was no wider risk to the public.

He added: “We appreciate the impact this incident is having on this small rural community and we’d like to thank local residents for their help with this investigation so far.”

Specialist officers are supporting the family of Mr Smith, who lived in Chapel-en-le-Frith.

The teenager was a former pupil at Chapel-en-le-Frith High School who had played for local football club Chapel Town and was known as a DJ at the town’s Shoulder of Mutton pub.

The pub described him as “a funny, polite, well mannered, charming young man who will be extremely missed by everyone”.

His mother, Kerry, a nurse, who was described as being “devastated” by the death of her son, posted a picture of herself with him on her Facebook page.

A police crime scene was still in place at a house in Eccles Road and is expected to remain for some time as investigations continue.

Locals have spoken of their shock at the tragedy.

Simon Barnwell, 60, who lives in Eccles Road, said: “It’s a pretty quiet town really. You don’t expect something of this magnitude anywhere - even in the centre of Birmingham or Manchester.

“We had a break-in on Eccles Road but that was 10 years ago now and everyone has alarm systems and video doorbells nowadays.”
