Two Door County highways are undergoing road work: No detours but occasional lane closures

DOOR COUNTY - The Door County Highway Department has begun two construction projects on county highways that will run for most of the month of May. Both will require lane closures at times, but full road closures with detours are not planned.

The first project, which started May 1, is on County ZZ, between Robin Lane at the south end and Meadow Road at the north, in the Town of Liberty Grove. It's a resurfacing project with paving of two lifts of asphalt, sawing of asphalt and concrete driveways, removal of material, road pulverization, grading and compaction. Shouldering and centerline striping will complete the project, which is scheduled to end, except for the centerlines, May 23.

Although no detours will be used for this work, paving operations, which are expected to take about a week, will require occasional lane closures. Flagpersons will control traffic during lane closures. Drivers in the construction zones should be aware that an oil adhesive will be applied between the two asphalt lifts, so the highway department is asking them to obey the flagpersons' directions and avoid driving on the oiled surface.

The second project, in conjunction with the village of Ephraim, started May 6 to upgrade the roadway and drainage on County Q (Church Street and part of Moravia Street) from State 42 to Norway Street.

The first week will see removal of a portion of the asphalt roadway along with asphalt and concrete driveways, followed by grading and compaction of the road. The following week, starting May 13, paving of two lifts of asphalt will begin, taking an estimated four to six working days.

As with the County ZZ project, paving operations may require occasional lane closure, and flagpersons will direct traffic at those times. Also as on County ZZ, an oil adhesive will be applied between the two asphalt lifts and drivers should obey the flagpersons' directions and avoid driving on the oiled surface.

After a short cure period, the road will be shouldered where needed and centerline stripes added. The expected completion date, without the striping, is May 31.

As with any road construction project, the work schedule is controlled by the weather. The highway department asks drivers to use caution when traveling near road construction equipment and crews and obey all signs. For more information, call the highway department at 920-746-2504.
