Two dogs running down Phoenix freeway cause police chase, traffic chaos
Here’s a police chase with a twist. The suspects in this Arizona crime caper weren’t behind a wheel; they were two crafty canines running loose down the freeway.
As local affiliate CBS 5 reports, traffic came to a standstill Wednesday when a pair of dogs were spied running down Phoenix’s Interstate Highway 17. Many drivers tried to give the pups a wide berth as they darted in and out of traffic, with some parking their cars and chasing after the “freeway fugitives.”
The Phoenix Fire Department and officers from the Department of Public Safety (DPS) were soon called to the scene, which trooper Kameron Lee described as “pretty intense.”
Video shows DPS officers trying to corral the animals as they sprinted from lane to lane. One dog was eventually apprehended, while his furry friend escaped into a nearby mobile home park.
“This guy’s buddy got caught, but he just does not want that to be his fate,” one bystander observed as the one remaining outlaw dashed away.
Residents were able to catch the dog by cornering it behind one of the mobile homes. The pup was promptly given water to cool off and recover from its wild jaunt.
What’s next for the two renegades? Doggy jail. Because a cameraman was bit in the pursuit, the dogs will have to be quarantined for 10 days.
They’re currently in the care of Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, who noted that one dog had an eye infection and both were unkempt. Their owner has yet to come forward, which means they could be put up for adoption once their quarantine has lifted and their health is restored.
Interested pet owners should probably invest in some good leashes — or a treadmill.
