2 dead, at least 3 injured in shooting at Austin, Tex., shopping center

A shooting at a popular Austin, Tex., shopping center left two people dead and at least three others injured on Thursday.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. local time near The Arboretum, an upscale outdoor shopping mall.

Law enforcement said the shooting happened at a business. Around 6:30 p.m., Austin Police said no individuals had been detained but that there was no longer a threat to the public.

According to police scanner information, officers originally responded to a report of shots fired and a bomb threat. Upon arrival, they found multiple people with gunshot wounds.

Units from the Austin Police Department, Austin-Travis County EMS, and the Austin Fire Department responded to the scene. The police bomb squad was called in to search the business for explosives.

At around 7:30 p.m. local time, EMS said two people were pronounced dead at the scene and one person was transported to a hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries. Two others were injured after the incident and were being evaluated at the scene with minor injuries.

Police requested that the public avoid the area.

The shooting occurred less than a week after a racist shooter killed three at a Jacksonville, Fla., Dollar General store.
