Two Danville house fires extinguished over the weekend

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Danville firefighters had a busy weekend as two separate house fires resulted in a collective $31,000 in damages, one displaced family, and two rescued dogs.

The first fire took place on Saturday just before 4:20 p.m. Firefighters responded to the area of Martin and May Streets. There, they found heavy smoke coming from a home.

The residents were safely outside by the time firefighters arrived, however, they said two dogs were still stuck inside.

Firefighters immediately entered the home and began searching for the pets — both of which were quickly rescued by firefighters from Danville’s Ladder Company. One of the dogs was found unresponsive, but was given oxygen therapy and recovered.

In the end, no one was hurt in the incident and the fire was extinguished. The home suffered $26,000 in damages.

Firefighters remained on scene until almost 6:15 p.m. to clean up and check for hot spots. Ameren Illinois, Aqua, and Arrow Ambulance assisted at the scene. The American Red Cross also arrived to help the now-displaced family.

Danville firefighters were not finished for the weekend, however, when a large house fire was reported at a vacant home near Chandler Street and North Logan Avenue on Sunday.

Around 5:30 p.m., fire crews found the home engulfed in flames. The evening’s high winds caused embers to be blown around, resulting in several small ground fires — and one on the roof of a neighbor’s house.

The Danville Fire Department was helped by Ameren Illinois, Arrow Ambulance, and Danville Street Department during the call.

No injuries were reported. Though the fires were eventually brought under control, officials considered the home a total loss with $5,000 in damages. Firefighters cleared the scene a little after 8 p.m.

The causes behind both weekend fires remain undetermined and under investigation at this time. Both homes also had no working smoke detectors.
