Two bills proposed to keep women’s rights to birth control

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Members of the Louisiana Legislature have filed proposed bills to secure the right for women to have birth control.

State Sen. Royce Duplessis (D-New Orleans) filed SB 225 and Rep. Delisha Boyd (D-New Orleans) filed HB 395. Both bills include the right to have access to contraceptives and prohibit any law that restricts the sale of emergency contraceptives. These filings are referred to as the Right to Contraception Act.

These bills are expected to be covered during the 2024 Regular Session.

In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which determined that the Constitution protects women’s rights to abortion.

During the 2022 Legislative Regular Session, former Gov. John Bel Edwards signed SB 342, which bans abortions and criminalizes any doctor performing abortions.
