Two arrested after chase leads to crashes, deputy injured in Houma

HOUMA, La. (WGNO) — A Houma man and a 17-year-old are in the custody of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office after a chase led to two crashes on Wednesday, May 22.

The TPSO reported deputies tried to pull over a car on Woodlawn Ranch Road after noticing “suspicious behavior by the driver” and traffic violations around 3 p.m.

TPSO officials said the driver, identified by deputies as 22-year-old Kenneth Juan Terrell Brooks Jr., allegedly drove away from the scene and led deputies on a chase.

The department claims Brooks ran a red light at the intersection of Oaklawn Drive and Grand Caillou Road and crashed into another car, leaving three people with non-life-threatening injuries.

After the crash, Brooks then allegedly tried to hit a Houma police officer’s unit and drive into a parking lot.

According to the TPSO, “the driver made an erratic driving maneuver which resulted in causing a crash with a TPSO unit,” leaving a deputy injured. The deputy was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

After the crash, Brooks allegedly tried to run away from the scene before being taken into custody.

Following an investigation, TPSO deputies said they identified the front-seat passenger as 17-year-old Jason Hernandez, who was then arrested.

During the chase, deputies said two guns were allegedly thrown out of the car.

Following a search of the car, TPSO detectives said they recovered live ammunition matching the guns thrown from the car, more than 54 grams of marijuana, about 10 THC vape pens, drug paraphernalia “linked to the distribution of illegal drugs” and about $500 in cash.

Brooks faces charges of aggravated flight from an officer, aggravated assault on a police officer, proper equipment required on vehicles, driver must be licensed, illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of a CDS, four counts of negligent injuring, obstruction of justice, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting an officer, two counts of possession with the intent to distribute a CDS I and transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses.

Hernandez faces charges of illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of a CDS, illegal possession of a handgun by a person under 18, obstruction of justice, possession of drug paraphernalia two counts of possession with the intent to distribute a CDS I and transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses.
