Two adults, child killed in Amtrak crash identified

Police have identified the the two adults and one child killed over the weekend when an Amtrak train struck a pickup on the train tracks in North Tonawanda, Niagara County.

David McMinn, 69, and Olive Geldart, 66, both of North Tonawanda, and Ra'Mari Geldart, 6, of Buffalo were killed in the crash at Felton Street and River Road on Friday evening, Capt. Daryl Truty of the North Tonawanda Police Department announced Monday afternoon.

The police department "extends its deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy," he said in a new release.

The crash occurred just before 8 p.m. on Friday at Felton Street and River Road, according to the North Tonawanda Police Department. All three people in the pickup died at the scene. The trio included a 69-year-old man, a 66-year-old woman, and a 6-year-old boy, Truty said.

According to media outlets in the Buffalo area, the pickup became stuck behind emergency vehicles, a disabled car, a tow truck and pedestrians. The pickup had pulled onto the tracks when the arms of the crossing gates descended, boxing in the pickup, which according to witnesses, had attempted to backup.

Amtrak said the train was traveling west. from New York City to Niagara Falls. No injuries were reported among the 21 passengers and crew onboard.
