Man who died in Highway 62 crash identified

A 22-year-old man died after a crash near the intersection of Highway 62 and Indian Canyon Drive early Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said in a release that the crash, which was reported at around 2:30 a.m., occurred when a Hyundai that was in the process of making a left turn from westbound Highway 62 onto North Indian Canyon Drive collided with a Dodge traveling eastbound on Highway 62.

After the initial crash, the Dodge continued moving northeast and collided with a streetlight on the northeast corner of the intersection. CHP said the reason for the crash is under investigation. The intersection is a four-way stop with stoplights. The driver of the Dodge, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was identified Friday as Jonathon Tucker, a resident of Twentynine Palms. The driver of the Hyundai, a man from Yucca Valley, sustained minor injuries.

The release did not mention if anyone has been determined to have been at fault in the crash but said alcohol or drugs do not appear to have been factors.

A portion of Highway 62 was closed for about two hours but has since reopened.

This is a developing story.
