A legal nuance as a result of some political involvement in classic British sports car brand TVR](https://www.autoclassics.com/posts?make=tvr) has tied up its attempted production of the [Griffith, with construction of a new factory delayed due to European Union rules.

TVR's all-new 500bhp Cosworth-tuned Ford V8-powered sports car, aimed at the Porsche 911 and Jaguar F-type, was revealed at the Goodwood Revival last year, but we’ve been privy to little information since as to what’s the deal with the latest TVR revival.
However, as a result of the Welsh government’s 3% ownership in a stake of the company and £2 million loan to the brand, European Union regulation has ruled out work taking place on bringing its Ebbw Vale, South Wales factory back to life until February 2019 at the very earliest, according to Autocar](https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/tvr-factory-construction-delayed-eu-rules). That's around the same time the first deliveries of the [Griffith were supposed to be taking place.
State funding of private commerce comes with many side effects, and one of these is that any contracts for work in such a project should be put to companies across the EU. In this case, the required reconstruction of the TVR factory cannot be offered solely to firms in the local area, but on a tender to the whole of Europe. These things obviously take time, and the decision on who wins the contract won’t be decided until January of next year.
The delay on production means deliveries are highly unlikely to start in the first quarter of 2019 as originally planned, especially as work on the factory won’t be taking place until then, let alone the building of the cars. TVR boss Les Edgar told Autocar that he believes there is still room for a production start date of March, dependant on whether cars can be built in TVR's neighbouring facility as work takes place on the original factory.
