Saturday April 1

Grand Tours of the Scottish Islands (BBC Two, 8pm)

Paul Murton embarks on his most difficult journey to date as every destination has been long abandoned by people, meaning there are no ferries, piers or proper landing stages. He visits the once-inhabited island of Heisgeir, sails around the gannet haven of Sula Sgeir and endures rough seas to make landfall on the extraordinarily remote island of North Rona.

Sunday April 2

Turkey with Simon Reeve (BBC Two, 9pm)

In the second half of the journey, Simon Reeve travels along the Black Sea Coast to the capital of Ankara and the Northern Highlands, witnessing first hand the aftermath of fighting in Kurdish areas and meeting a conservationist attempting to preserve the region's brown bears. He then returns to Istanbul, where he takes part in a popular TV series set in the palace of the Ottoman Sultans.

Monday April 3

Travel Man: 48 Hours in Miami (Channel 4, 8.30pm)

Richard Ayoade and comedian Rhod Gilbert take on 48 hours in Florida's hot spot, for a densely packed mini-break including art, art deco slobbing, alligators, yoga, speedboats and dominos. There also squeeze in an airboat tour of the Florida's everglades and a trip to Little Havana.

Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby (BBC Two, 9pm)

Giles Coren and Monica Galetti work at Mashpi Lodge in Ecuador, which is 900 metres above sea level and features a gondola cable car that transports guests a mile through the rainforest canopy. The pair reveal the challenges of delivering the highest standards of experience in the midst of teeming wildlife, mud and moisture, as well as the eco-tourism that is saving thousands of species, and also spend time with their new co-workers at home, hearing moving stories of how local people's lives have been transformed by the arrival of the hotel.

Roof Racks and Hatchbacks: The Family Car (BBC Four, 9pm)

Timeshift draws on the archives to explore the British experience of going on holiday in the family car. Taking in the Morris Minor, the Range Rover and the Volvo Estate, the film tells of the search for practical and sensible designs, how the family car has evolved and the joy and frustration of being cooped up in a car on long journeys.

Tuesday April 4

Great American Railroad Journeys (BBC Two, 7pm)

Michael Portillo continues his American rail journey west to Jefferson City, Missouri, following the tracks of European settlers in the 19th century. In St Louis he ascends America's monument to the Wild West, the Gateway Arch, the tallest free-standing monument in the US. On the banks of the Missouri River, the political commentator is invited aboard a replica of the original keel boat used for an historic expedition. In Washington, Missouri, Portillo tries to craft a corn cob pipe, and in Jefferson City he finds an huge fortified building that served as the jail for the entire Wild West.

Yorkshire: A Year in the Wild (Channel 5, 9pm)

Autumn is on hold as summer continues, with unexpectedly balmy conditions throwing a life line to the roe deer as they prepare for the winter ahead. For other animals, mating season has arrived, making for a dangerous and testosterone-fuelled time at Ravenscar Beach.

Wednesday April 5

Great American Railroad Journeys (BBC Two, 7pm)

Michael Portillo continues his journey westwards across the United States, discovering the hidden pleasures of 19th-century railroad workers in Sedalia and learning more about the birthplace of ragtime. He then travels to Paola, Kansas, where he auctions livestock and dines on spare ribs, before reaching his destination in St Joseph, Missouri.

Second Chance Summer: Tuscany (BBC Two, 9pm)

Series following 10 strangers at turning points in their lives who are brought together to take over an Italian farm in the foothills of Mount Amiata, adjusting to the challenges of communal living in another country. In the first episode, they face the difficult tasks of bringing in a harvest of Merlot grapes and keeping the local wild boar at bay.

Thursday April 6

Great American Railroad Journeys (BBC Two, 7pm)

In Lawrence, Kansas, Michael Portillo joins the Jayhawks basketball team in the famous Allen Field house stadium with energetic encouragement from their cheerleaders, before travelling through Tornado Alley to Topeka to meet one of the first storm chasers in America. Driving out on the Great Plains, Portillo learns about the Tallgrass Prairie and comes face to face with a herd of wild buffalo

Bill Bailey takes his dog out in the Lake District, Sarah Parish is in the New Forest with her border terrier and Ben Fogle is in Dungeness with his Labrador.

Galápagos (BBC Two, 9pm)

Liz Bonnin and the team continue to explore the archipelago, much of which still remains a mystery to science. The presenter ventures far beneath the waves in a deep-sea submersible in search of an elusive ocean giant, the mola or sunfish, to understand more about its little-known behaviour. She also sees how sea lions have been affected by the El Nino weather phenomenon, before the team sails north for the most remote and inhospitable islands in the Galápagos - Wolf and Darwin, where Bonnin helps tag and track hammerhead sharks that school at this location.

Friday April 7

Tony Robinson: Coast to Coast (Five, 8pm)

The actor explores the Yorkshire Dales and in the town of Hawes, meets the team who came together to save local production of Wensleydale cheese and visits the market town of Leyburn on calf auction day, before heading to Aysgarth Falls, a triple flight of waterfalls carved out of the River Ure. 

Hotel Armadillo: Natural World (BBC Two, 9pm)

The giant armadillo, an animal so elusive few have ever seen it wild in the Brazilian wetlands region known as the Pantanal. David Attenborough reveals how the burrows the armadillos dig create homes for hundreds of other animals. Until recently man knew virtually nothing of this species, but Arnaud Desbiez, the founder of the Giant Armadillo Project, has changed all that.

Spectacular Spain with Alex Polizzi (Five, 9pm)

On the Costa Blanca, the presenter reveals how thriving port Valencia has much more to offer than just its sandy beaches. She samples horchata, a sweet drink made from tiger nuts and another local speciality - paella. She also visits the cathedral, where a small chapel houses an ancient chalice believed by some to be the Holy Grail.
