Tuskegee Airmen to be honored in Memorial Day weekend event

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) – The Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American military servicemen, will be honored in a special presentation this weekend in Horseheads.

Return of the Red Tails 2024 will present the “Remembering the Tuskegee Airmen” event on Saturday, May 25, from 10 a.m. until noon at the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center located at 339 Daniel Zenker Drive. Doors for the event open at 9:30 a.m.

Admission to the event is $25 per person and includes a souvenir t-shirt and program booklet, a tour of the Wings of Eagle Discovery Center and light refreshments. Children under 10 will be allowed in at no cost.

A portion of the funds that are raised at the event will support the Tuskegee Airmen Chapter Operations Fund and Educational Assistance Fund, which will offer financial assistance to students who are pursuing an education in aviation, engineering and technology.

Halfway to Halloween coming to Elmira this week

At the event, Tuskegee Airman Torchbearer Michael Joseph, a historian with the Captain Claude B. Govan Tri-State NY NJ CT chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, will be speaking about the late Tuskegee Airman Lieutenant Herbert Thorpe and highlight the lives of many of the Tuskegee Airmen who visited the region to inform the local community since 1997.

Lieutenant Thorpe was originally meant to be the speaker at the event but passed away after a brief illness in January. His memory will be honored at the event by sharing excerpts from interviews that have never been aired before, including his last recorded interview on Dec. 20, 2023.

In addition to the speaker, a variety of other activities will take place at the event.

This includes the re-dedication of the twin-turbo Faithful Pursuit Tuskegee Airmen Red Tail race car, the re-dedication of the informative Wings of Eagle Tuskegee Airmen display, a presentation by the Mayor of the City of Corning Bill Boland, Rolling Thunder display with authentic WWII Tuskegee Airmen artifacts and rare autographed memorabilia for sale.
