Tuscumbia man pleads guilty to animal cruelty, sentenced

COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – A man pleaded guilty to charges of animal cruelty in court on Monday and was sentenced to complete community service as well as jail time.

Court documents show that 23-year-old Garrett Larkin pleaded guilty to a prior animal cruelty charge after he was arrested for driving under the influence on April 19.

Larkin was originally arrested for animal cruelty on April 4 after court records stated his neighbors saw him beating a dog with a knotted rope. The neighbors reportedly advised Colbert County deputies that Larkin had done the same thing to a cat weeks prior.

“Mr. Larkin stated that he did go overboard with the beating of the dog,” a deputy wrote in a report detailing the incident.

Larkin was released on bond shortly after he was arrested for cruelty to animals.

The DUI arrest a couple weeks later violated Larkin’s bond conditions, his bond was revoked and he was taken back to the Colbert County Jail before pleading guilty to the animal cruelty charge.

As part of the guilty plea, he was sentenced to 180 days in jail. However, he will only serve 30 of those days.

Larkin must complete a minimum of 50 hours of community service at the Colbert County Animal Shelter. Outside of his community service, he is also no longer allowed to own or be around animals.
