Tuscola Fire Captain returns home following cancer treatment

TUSCOLA, Ill. (WCIA) — A longtime member of the Tuscola Fire Department is back at home after receiving treatment for brain cancer.

Captain Bill Schweighart has served in the Tuscola Fire Department for 28 years, but his biggest battle started in December, when he was diagnosed with glioblastoma. It’s the most common and most aggressive form of brain cancer.

Schweighart underwent surgery in Chicago a few weeks later, followed by radiation and chemotherapy. On Thursday, the Tuscola Fire Department said Schweighart is back home and spending time with his family.

The department said it appreciates all of the support the community has shown for Schweighart throughout the last four months. There is a new way that people can support him: a meal train organized by his family.
