Theresa Caputo show is Tuesday

Spruce Up the Trails is Saturday

DOVER − TuscParks is hosting Spruce Up the Trails from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Volunteers can choose to participate at Canal Lands Park or the Norma Johnson Center. Crews will be doing general spring cleaning along the trails by collecting litter, cleaning up fallen branches, prepping flower beds, etc. TuscParks will provide basic hand tools, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own.

This event will be held rain or shine but will be canceled in severe weather. For more information, call TuscParks at 330-365-3278.

Humane Society fundraiser is Saturday

DOVER − The 16th annual Tuscarawas County Humane Society Cause for Paws Gala will be Saturday at Breitenbach Tool Shed. There will be silent auction items, live auctions, grab bags, a wine toss, and other chances to win prizes. Along with the auctions, there will be dinner, desserts, and live music. Tickets are $65. Drug Takeback event at Union Hospital

DOVER − Tuscarawas County residents may drop off unwanted medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital as part of a national Drug Takeback Event.

A deputy from the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office will be at the hospital to accept the medications for proper disposal. The Drug Takeback program is completely anonymous, and no name or ID will be requested.

Medication containers should be placed in a transparent plastic bag. Those in their original prescription bottles may have the patient’s name on the label blacked out if desired. Officials will not accept any used needles, liquids or any peroxide-based medications.

Outdated and unwanted medications also may be taken any time of the day or night to the lobby of the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, at 2295 Reiser Ave. SE, New Philadelphia, and to other area police departments. For more information, call 330-339-2000.

Programs at the Dover Library this month

DOVER − In recognition of April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month, author Patricia S. Sherman will present What Can You Do About You? A Review of Life After Child Abuse at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, at the Dover Library. During the program, Sherman will introduce her book “The Blue Swing: Child Abuse, Choices and Living without Anger,” in which she writes of the insecurities and the doubts that she and her sister suffered because of child abuse. The library is honoring the legacy of the RMS Titanic by exhibiting items donated by local Titanic enthusiast Brian Morgan. Among the items featured are an actual tile from the first-class smoking room, an authentic White Star Line China Plate, and the screenplay to the 1997 film “Titanic,” autographed by the film’s director James Cameron.

The library is featuring the watercolor, acrylic and mixed media pieces of local artist Deb Walker in the Community Room Art Gallery this month.

Arbor Day celebration, tree planting Friday

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The City of New Philadelphia will hold an Arbor Day celebration at 10 a.m. Friday at the Southside Community Park. Mayor Joel Day will read the Arbor Day proclamation and join Service Director Ron McAbier in planting several trees at the park.

Strasburg woman is Big Sister of the Year

NEW PHILADELPHIA − Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio named Pamela Taylor, of Strasburg, as the 2024 Big Sister of the Year for her commitment to her Little, Aubrianna, of Uhrichsville.

Mentoring Specialist Missy Parrish said, "Pam is very supportive of Aubrianna and her family. She has grown to know and love them all. Aubrianna has the biggest smile, and she lights up when she is with Pam. Pam intuitively knows how to help Aubrianna thrive, and she has encouraged her to participate in school activities like Power of the Pen and the Yearbook Club. Aubrianna has flourished in her Middle School environment where we see many kids struggle.”

Brittany Douglas and Dan Warther were previously given this award in 2020 and 2023.

Roast beef dinner to benefit fire department

SCIO − Scio Volunteer Fire Department will hold a fundraiser roast beef dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 28. All-you-can-eat price is $15 for adults, $8 for children younger than 10. East-in or carryout available.

SUGARCREEK − Members of the Tuscarawas-Holmes Music Teachers Association will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Walnut Creek Mennonite Church, 21619 County Highway 144.

Member teachers include Mary Cooper, of Dover; Julie Beachy, of Sugarcreek; Jennifer Dodson, of Dennison; Shannon Mitchell, of Dover; Luci Shank, of Walnut Creek; Judith Schenker, of Strasburg; Susan Weaver, of Millersburg; and Joan Goth, Phyllis Ronald, and Melanie Winn, of New Philadelphia. The program will include select students Grace Pauley, Gabriel Winn and Cadence Mitchell.
