Tucumcari athletic director, coach named to NMAA hall of fame

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The NMAA announced the 116th member into its hall of fame on Thursday. The 2024 inductee is longtime Tucumcari Rattler, Wayne Ferguson.

In a career that has spanned over 30 years, Ferguson has spent time as a teacher, coach and athletic director. As a teacher, he has spent time in the classroom in special education, biology, algebra and applied technology. As a coach, Ferguson has led the Rattlers in boys and girls basketball, wrestling, football and track & field. He remains Tucumcari’s head track & field coach and he led the team to state titles in 2008 and 2017.

In his career, Ferguson earned several coaching awards, including the 2021 NHFS New Mexico Boys Track Coach of the Year, and later that year he was a national coach of the Year finalist. He was also inducted into the New Mexico track & cross country coaches association hall of fame in 2018.

In an executive role, Ferguson has also served on the NMAA commission, the NMAA football and track & field sports specific committees, and he was also the district chairperson from 2002-2018.

Prior to his professional career, Ferguson was a student-athlete at Tucumcari. He was a multi-sport athlete in football, basketball and track and was all-state selection in football.

Ferguson will officially be inducted at the second annual New Mexico High School Sports Award Show and Dinner which is scheduled for Thursday July 25th at 5:30 p.m. at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
