Tua Tagovailoa's brother verbally commits to play QB at Alabama

Alabama’s future quarterback situation gets more and more fascinating.

Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Alabama QB Tua, verbally committed to play football at Alabama while at the school’s spring game Saturday. Like Tua, Taulia is a quarterback and is ranked as the No. 10 dual-threat quarterback in the high school class of 2019 and the No. 11 prospect overall in the state of Alabama.

“I didn’t plan on committing today,” Taulia told Rivals’ Bama Insider. “It was just a feeling I had. It’s family over there not just my family the entire Alabama family. My family is very happy though. Mom and dad are very happy.”

“I’ve seen everything first-hand with Tua’s experience at Alabama. It’s a really good fit for me. It’s all family with me and the coaches like [assistant coach Tosh Lupoi] and all the other guys. Coach [Dan] Enos is cool. I like him a lot. I think after the spring is finished we will talk a lot more.”

The Tagovailoa family moved to Alabama from Hawaii after Tua signed with the Crimson Tide. Taulia is the second 2019 quarterback to verbally commit to Alabama this spring. Paul Tyson, the grandson of legendary Alabama coach Bear Bryant, has already committed to the school.

As of now, the two would join Tua, 2017 starter Jalen Hurts and Mac Jones in Alabama’s quarterback group. But it doesn’t seem like a guarantee that both Tua Tagovailoa and Hurts will be with the team in 2019, let alone 2018.

Former Alabama assistant Lane Kiffin previously said he felt Tua would have transferred from Alabama had he not played in the second half of the team’s National Championship win over Georgia. Hurts’ father made it seem in an interview published this week that his son would transfer if he didn’t win the quarterback job in 2018.

Hurts has gotten the majority of practice time this spring thanks to an injury Tua Tagovailoa suffered to his left throwing hand. Tagovailoa missed Saturday’s spring game because of it.

Alabama coach Nick Saban has not given any indication as to which quarterback has an edge in the race and we don’t expect him to for quite some time, contributing to the intrigue surrounding the situation. While Tualia Tagovailoa’s commitment may not have a direct impact on the 2018 quarterback competition, it’s impossible not to wonder what it means for the Tide’s quarterback future.
