Trump declares Warren 'a very angry person' before cursing the media
On Friday, President Trump took aim at Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., during a profanity-laced speech to a realtors association, describing the 2020 presidential candidate as “an angry person.”
Trump, who fumed on Twitter much of the morning, also twice blasted the word “bulls***” in regard to media reports covering his administration.
In his speech, the president boasted of cutting government regulation of the housing and banking industries, and derided the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the agency Warren helped establish in the wake of the Great Recession.
“Pocahontas had an agency that was, I mean, she was a disaster,” Trump said of Warren, reverting to the derisive nickname he has used to mock her claim of Native American ancestry.
“She enjoyed destroying these local lenders,” he continued. “I mean, I think she got pleasure out of destroying beautiful local lenders who have been lending to your clients and probably yourselves for years and they were going out of business and they were, they were living in fear. Pocahontas, that’s another beauty.”
In November 2017, Trump appointed Mick Mulvaney the CFPB’s acting director, who effectively reversed the agency’s mission through rollbacks of regulations, including those put in place to shield consumers from predatory lenders.
Trump went on to describe what he saw as Warren’s personality: “She’s got a lot of pent-up anger,” Trump said. “She’s an angry person.”
A Fox News national poll released Friday shows Warren beating Trump in a hypothetical head-to-head 2020 matchup by a margin of 43 percent to 41 percent.
Moments after his remarks on Warren, the president segued to an attack on another frequent target: the media. Saying “the press doesn’t give me credit for anything I do,” Trump praised himself for coming up with the term “fake news” to describe an industry that, he claimed, often invents sources when reporting stories that show him in a negative light.
“They say ‘confidential sources.’ Did you ever notice they don’t write the names of people anymore. Everything is ‘a source says.’ There is no source. The person doesn’t exist. The person’s not alive. It’s bulls*** OK? It’s bulls***.”
His anger on Friday wasn’t reserved only for Warren and the media. The president began his day railing against the FBI for investigating his 2016 presidential campaign’s contacts with Russians.
“My Campaign for President was conclusively spied on,” Trump tweeted. “Nothing like this has ever happened in American Politics. A really bad situation. TREASON means long jail sentences, and this was TREASON!”
