  • Breitbart!

  • Trump was imagining a scenario in which left-wing activists started having a massive barney with his supporters

Somebody reset the big counter of how many days it's been since Donald Trump said something with a distinctly authoritarian flavour back to zero: he's at it again.

The Toronto Star spotted an interview Trump did with Breitbart earlier this week in which he mused on how many really beefy boys he would have on his side in a theoretical pitched battle between left-wing activists and the "tough people" on his side.

"You know, the left plays a tougher game, it’s very funny," Trump said, not elaborating on the joke. "I actually think that the people on the right are tougher, but they don’t play it tougher. Okay? I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers For Trump. I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough - until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad."

Hmm. Foreshadowing pitched battles between left-wing protestors and Trump-loving biker gangs seems slightly worrying, and no amount of wrapping it up in heavens-I-sure-hope-that-doesn't-happen stops it being deeply concerning.

If you're wondering who these "tough people" are, by the way, Bikers For Trump is a gang of roughly 20,000 motorcycling hardnuts (though likely far fewer than that) who swore to protect Trump's rallies while he was running for the presidency. They were very concerned about free speech and didn't like the idea of 'paid protestors' (normal people) picketing Trump's appearances (exercising their freedom of speech).

They've always said they're non-violent, but it's quite hard to tell the difference between Bikers For Trump and bikers who are for Trump. For instance, one biker who was up for guarding Trump's rallies back in 2016 suggested lethal force might be an idea: "If that means us having to protect ourselves by taking someone else’s life, that’s what we’re going to have to do."
