The problem is that California sets the standards in the auto industry as they are the strictest. The MPG standard is based on what they say in reality as their standard is higher than the rest of the country and as a result auto manufacturers conform to them. So even if Trump says cars can be 1 MPG and California says 35 MPG the cars the next year will be 35 MPG or better and they have a legal right to set whatever standard they want for their state and the federal government can't do a thing about it.
The Government never mandated that the horse and buggy be replaced by the automobile. It became a better option and the consumers made the change. CAFE standards, CAFE stands for Corporate Average fuel Economy were put in place in the early eighties after the oil embargo years. Automakers were forced to increase mileage on all cars. That did two things. Automakers were forced to make cars out of lighter materials that were more fuel efficient but not as safe in an accident. And trucks were not included in the CAFE Standards. This spawned the Minivan and SUV phenomenon. Which these two model lines probably burned more fuel. Let the market decide.
Won't Make a Difference at All
California Will KEEP those Standards and the Auto Industry will Produce ALL Their Vehicles to Comply !
Yea, right auto industry are purposely going to make less efficient vehicles. Except for trucks and suvs, it's a given manufactures will move forward to not stay the same and even with the noted, industries will move forward to become more efficient. Competition has consequences.
My v8 400hp muscle car gets 25mpg highway, the industry has come a long way. My first mustang, v8 1972 got under 14 at 170 hp.
It's a good thing that the auto industry has already said that they are going to continue trying to meet the strict standards Obama set, even if they were repealed.
“We are delivering on President Trump’s promise to correct the current fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions standards,” Andrew Wheeler, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, said in a statement Tuesday. Isn't the EPA supposed to PROTECT our environment? Car emissions are one of the biggest causes of pollution in the U.S. It seems this administration puts business and the economy ahead of our health and now our planet. Please vote in November as if your life depends on it.
" appears driven by Trump’s push to undo regulatory initiatives of former President Barack Obama and say even the administration has had difficulty pointing to the kind of specific, demonstrable benefits to drivers, public health and safety or the economy that normally accompany standards changes." Of course. Let's deregulate to make the BIG companies more money right before the election.......has to keep their donations coming in, right??? No matter HOW IT AFFECTS THE REST OF US!!!! And let's slide it in , in the midst of a National emergency with the crisis.
They can make tin cans on wheels, but it doesn't mean people want them or will buy them. the standards are still being increased for fuel mileage, but are actually possible to reach. I really don't want to ride a bike thank you !
"The Trump administration rolled back ambitious Obama-era vehicle mileage standards Tuesday, raising the ceiling on damaging fossil fuel emissions for years to come and gutting one of the United States’ biggest efforts against climate change. Because it was enacted by Obama.
Don't buy a car that isnt fuel efficient if you don't want to.
Why? Car manufacturers are never going to listen to this anyway. Why would they reconfigure to be LESS efficient plus states have stricter laws anyway, they will design to THOSE Standards
