Trump predicts impeachment will complicate reelection for Schumer, Nadler

President Donald Trump on Monday predicted that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler will be defeated by more liberal primary challengers as a result of their handling of the impeachment push against him.

“Because of how badly they did with the Impeachment Hoax, AOC will primary Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, and win, and Jerry Nadler has a good chance of losing to his far left primary opponent!” Trump wrote on Twitter. “It is all getting quite interesting. Pelosi will lose the House, AGAIN! My poll numbers great.”

Trump also said last week, as well, that not only would Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) run againstSchumer, but he told television news journalists at a pre-State of the Union lunch that the progressive freshman congresswoman would “kick his ass.”

Spokespeople for Schumer, Nadler and Ocasio-Cortez did not immediately return emails seeking comment on the president's social media post.

Nadler will face a handful of opponents in the Democratic primary for his House seat — including Lindsey Boylan, a former New York state official, and Jonathan Herzog, a former staffer for presidential candidate Andrew Yang.

The long-serving congressman from Manhattan’s West Side is leader of the panel that approved two articles of impeachment in December, and he also served a House manager prosecuting the case against the president in the Senate trial. He is up for reelection in 2020, along with all other House members.

Schumer helped ensure his Democratic Caucus did not break ranks during the Senate impeachment proceedings, denying Trump a bipartisan acquittal by the chamber last week. He does not face reelection until 2022.
