Trump was the most tweeted about politician in 2019

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump was the most tweeted about politician in 2019, the social media site says in their Year on Twitter global report.

The massive reach of Trump's twitter account - at 67.4 million followers - and his unprecedented consistency of using the platform, coupled with his tendency to utilize it for making official statements and announcing policy changes, shows how Americans are able to interact with their elected officials - even in the highest office - in the modern age.

Trump interacts with other tweeters, as well as posts his approval and disdain for fellow politicians, his thoughts on diplomacy, and reflections on the impeachment inquiry into him.

Much of what he says on Twitter alone becomes the news. Under the 1978 Presidential Records Act, Trump's tweets are considered public property, and recorded living history.

Twitter reports that Trump was also followed by his predecessor, former President Barack Obama. And while Obama has about 40% more followers than Trump — at 110.6 million — he came in second as the most mentioned politician.

Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortex, D-N.Y, came in fourth after being thrust into the national spotlight last year when she defeated a well-known and powerful incumbent in New York's 14th congressional district while working as a waitress. In January of 2019, she began her first term as the youngest congresswoman ever.

2020 Democratic candidates Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and former Vice President Joe Biden made the list at sixth and eighth place respectively. They both announced their campaigns in 2019.
