Trump And Climate Change: Scientists and Activists Plan Marches in Washington DC

Singer Bruce Springsteen called Saturday's protests the beginning of a "new American resistance."

After more than one million people joined the Women's March on Washington and its sister protests, organizers are now planning a Scientists' March on Washington and a “People’s Climate March.”

Just before the Women’s March kicked off, a user on Reddit posted, "There needs to be a Scientists' March on Washington."

Other users agreed saying they would definitely go to the event.

“Man, my father and I would be with you in a heartbeat. I'm a Physics major and he's a Biology professor. If this gets organized, we will march!” commented a user. “I would fly from Hawaii to join,” added another.

The march is attracting those outside the science field too. “I'm an artist but passionate about science. I'll march too!” said a user on Reddit.

Scientists’ March

After the comments, organizers a Twitter account for the Science March was launched. The account, @ScienceMarchDC, already has nearly 60,000 followers. On the event’s website, organizers said they are working to schedule the non-partisan march in D.C. and across the United States. The date has not been set and organizers aren’t accepting donations yet.

Plans for the march comes after President Donald Trump’s administration deleted climate change references from the White House website (Trump has previously said global warming is a hoax.) His transition team for the Environmental Protection Agency are reportedly planning massive cuts at the agency and ending funding for scientific research. His administration also recently barred the Environmental Protection Agency from posting social media updates and speaking to the press.

“Slashing funding and restricting scientists from communicating their findings (from tax-funded research!) with the public is absurd and cannot be allowed to stand as policy,” said organizers in a post on Jan. 21. “An American government that ignores science to pursue ideological agendas endangers the world.”

Climate March

Activists are also planning the People’s Climate March on April 29 in Washington D.C. and across the nation, the Sierra Club announced Wednesday.

“The April 29th march comes in response to widespread outrage against President Trump’s disastrous anti-climate agenda - including his executive orders yesterday advancing the Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines,” said the organization in a statement.

The last People’s Climate March was in 2014 in New York City, where more than 400,000 people gathered. This year’s event will coincide with the end of Trump’s first 100 days in office.
