Trump calls for an end to investigations of his administration

A defiant Donald Trump called for an end to the numerous investigations into his administration during Tuesday’s State of the Union address, framing those inquiries as hurting the nation’s economic progress.

“An economic miracle is taking place in the United States and the only thing that can stop it are foolish wars, politics or ridiculous partisan investigations,” Trump said to cheers from some of his Republican colleagues and deafening silence from Democrats. “If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation. It just doesn’t work that way.”

Democrats retook control of the House of Representatives in the 2018 midterm elections, regaining the power of the gavel, which has allowed them to begin multiple investigations into the president and his administration. Meanwhile, special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump presidential campaign’s ties to Russia during the 2016 election continues apace.

Trump’s broadside against congressional Democrats was reminiscent of the plea made by President Richard Nixon during the 1974 State of the Union address.

“I believe the time has come to bring that investigation and the other investigations of this matter to an end,” Nixon said. “One year of Watergate is enough.”

Less than eight months later, Nixon resigned from office.
