Trump blasts FBI Director Wray in wake of report
U.S. President Donald Trump blasted FBI director Christopher Wray on Tuesday, tweeting he would "never be able to fix the FBI."
Trump lashed out at Wray after a Justice Department inspector general report found that the FBI exhibited no political bias in its investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 Trump campaign… though it did find 17 missteps by the bureau.
Wray was asked on ABC News Monday if he thought the FBI had unfairly targeted the Trump campaign.
He responded, “I do not.”
That prompted Trump to tweet Tuesday: "I don’t know what report current Director of the FBI Christopher Wray was reading, but it sure wasn’t the one given to me. With that kind of attitude, he will never be able to fix the FBI, which is badly broken despite having some of the greatest men & women working there!"
In his interview Monday, Wray said he took the errors seriously but noted that the report had found that the FBI probe was opened with, quote, "appropriate predication and authorization.”
Wray also pushed back against the notion - advanced largely by Trump and his backers - that the FBI is part of a “deep state” bureaucratic network aimed at undermining Trump, calling the term an affront to those who work at the bureau. Wray was appointed by Trump to lead the FBI after Trump fired former director James Comey.
Representatives for the FBI and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Trump’s tweet.
