Trubisky Time: Bears GM says team will cut QB Mike Glennon

The Chicago Bears have found their quarterback of the future – and it’s not Mike Glennon.

Signed just a year ago to a three-year, $45 million contract, Glennon will become a free agent in a couple of weeks, as Chicago general manager Ryan Pace told reporters at the NFL scouting combine on Wednesday morning that the team will release Glennon at the start of the new league year on March 14.

The move will cost the Bears $4.5 million in dead money against the cap in 2018.

While in some ways it’s easy to shake your head and question the Bears’ decision to sign Glennon to a pretty substantial deal in the first place – he had only appeared in two games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016, serving as Jameis Winston’s backup and was an unimpressive 5-13 in his starts over the 2014-15 seasons – they were also very aggressive in moving up just one spot in the first round, from No. 3 to No. 2, last year to take Mitchell Trubisky.

And Chicago believes it made the right choice with Trubisky, clearly: he started the final 12 games of the season, and with the move to cut Glennon loose, the team is his. The Bears were 1-3 with Glennon as starter, 4-8 with Trubisky running the offense.

This is also a case where things worked out for the player too: Glennon made $18.5 million in guaranteed money to start four games and serve as Trubisky’s backup for a dozen. And now he’ll likely sign to be a backup elsewhere.
