SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — About 40 protesters remained inside the state Capitol Monday night after California Highway Patrol officers shut down the building and threatened to arrest them. The number dwindled from about 100 after officers gave the order to leave.
The number of police soon outnumbered the protesters, who chanted "No cuts, no fees, education must be free." They were part of a daylong protest over state budget cuts to education.
Hundreds more protesters and police officers remained outside; dozens of CHP officers in riot gear stood in rows.
