TriStar planning to build full-service hospital in Spring Hill

SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — After years of driving to Columbia or Franklin for a hospital, residents of Spring Hill may soon have one of their own.

TriStar Health representatives told News 2 that Spring Hill is Tennessee’s largest city without a hospital.

“You could see that there was a need for, an apparent need for, a hospital,” Dr. Jeffrey Scott Jobe, medical director at TriStar Spring Hill ER, said. “With the growth that has occurred over the past 20 years, including the addition of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and even 55-and-older facilities, that need is even more apparent now.”

“I’ve lived in Spring Hill for 24 years, and I used to be a firefighter and medic,” Spring Hill Mayor Jim Hagaman said. “We did not have a hospital close back then, and a lot of times, firefighters would have to get in an ambulance to go either north or south with the patient who wasn’t having a good day, and I was the firefighter that did that, and so it will be great for our providers, our EMS personnel, as well as our firefighters and police that they can come right here to a hospital.”

However, on Monday, April 15, city and hospital officials announced the plan to apply for a certificate of need with the state to build a full-service hospital next to the already established Spring Hill ER.

The hospital would service more than 50,000 residents in the growing city.

Right now, if someone is giving birth or needs an MRI, they have to travel over 20 minutes to reach a hospital with the resources to treat them, but if a hospital in Spring Hill were to be built, patients would have access to 68 beds, four operating rooms, an intensive care unit, a labor and delivery unit, a neonatal intensive care unit, cardiac catheterization services, and imaging services.

The $250 million hospital would be built on the same site as the existing TriStar Spring Hill ER.

“We want to have our babies here, and so we are definitely going to put an L&D – labor and delivery unit – in the hospital,” Hagaman said. “There’s going to be some heart procedures. There’s going to be some general surgeries that are done here.”

Jobe explained that a full-service hospital is long overdue.

“I’ve been in this community since 2004, and I just think people need access to healthcare,” Jobe said. “It’ll keep more people in the community from having to travel outside the community to seek healthcare.”

The hospital is estimated to bring 3,000 high-paying jobs during the first five years of operation.

For more information on the hospital, a community information meeting will be held on May 14 at Community Baptist Church from 5 to 7 p.m.
