Trial resumes for man accused in Officer Bohannon’s death

ST. LOUIS — Testimony is set to continue today in the trial of Thomas Kinworthy, 47, the man accused of fatally shooting St. Louis City police officer Tamarris Bohannon and injuring his partner.

The trial, taking place in the Civil Courts Building, enters its third day today. More prosecution witnesses are expected to testify.

Kinworthy faces several charges, including first-degree murder, for the death of Officer Bohannon, who was 29 years old at the time of the incident in August 2020. Bohannon’s wife and three children survive him, and he had been on the force for three and a half years.

Authorities report that Kinworthy shot a homeless man before forcing his way into a couple’s home on Hartford Street, near Tower Grove Park. He then ordered the couple out and barricaded himself inside. Prosecutors say that when Bohannon and his partner, Arlando Bailey, responded, Kinworthy ambushed them from a second-floor window. Bohannon was struck in the head, and Bailey was shot in the leg.

After a lengthy standoff, Kinworthy was arrested. His attorney acknowledges that Kinworthy shot Bohannon and Bailey but argues that he suffers from a mental illness and was experiencing a psychotic episode, which impaired his understanding of his actions. The attorney is advocating for Kinworthy to be sent to a state mental hospital instead of prison.

Tuesday’s court proceedings included testimony from Bohannon’s partner, and more police officers are slated to testify today. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
