Trial postponed for 2 suspected of killing 5-year-old boy

After the trial was confirmed for two defendants charged with the shooting death of 5-year-old Kason Guyton in 2017, the trial was delayed to June following a Monday hearing in Kern County Superior Court.

Jonathan Knight, 34, is charged with four counts of shooting at an inhabited vehicle, assault with a semi-automatic weapon on a person, two counts of possessing a firearm as a felon, first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of carrying a loaded firearm in public as a member of a criminal street gang and one count of participating in a street gang.

Jeremy King, 32, is charged with three counts of shooting at an inhabited vehicle, one count of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of assault with a semi-automatic firearm on a person, one count of possessing a firearm as a felon and one count of carrying a loaded firearm in public as a member of a criminal street gang.

Knight did not appear in court Monday but his defense attorney, Tim Hennessy, on behalf of the Indigent Defense Program, appeared in court. In contrast, King appeared in court and his defense attorney, Andrew Flier from Los Angeles County, called into court for the hearing.

Flier is currently engaged in a trial in Burbank, which he told Judge Eric Bradshaw may last up to six weeks. Hennessy asked to discuss trial dates again with the court in about three weeks.

The next hearing is scheduled for June 11. Both are being held without bail.
