The Travis County sheriff's office is investigating an early Monday slaying in a Northwest Austin neighborhood, near McNeil High School, the agency said in a news release.

The gunman had not been captured as of 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Deputies responded to a check-welfare call in the 13000 block of Amarillo Avenue, near McNeil Drive and West Parmer Lane, at 3:57 a.m. Monday. Upon arrival, they found an unresponsive man in his 40s lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds, the release said.

Deputies began to perform life-saving measures and were relieved minutes later by Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services medics. However, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and the man died at the scene, the release said.
