Travelers return to Tampa International Airport after a chaotic weekend

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Bad weather caused thousands of flight delays and cancellations across the country over the weekend and some travelers were back at Tampa International Airport Monday morning still trying to make it home.

The Ketterer family was originally supposed to fly out of Orlando on Sunday, but they were some of the many people at TPA on Monday morning.

“Our flight to Pittsburg was delayed twice then it was canceled,” James Ketterer said. “They rebooked us to Tampa. We drove over to Tampa Airport and that flight got pushed back two times then that was canceled. Now we’re on the first flight out of here.” James Ketterer said.

The Ketterers said they spent hundreds of dollars on hotel rooms, rental cars, and food while dealing with all this.

Appearing to be traveling light, we asked if they knew where their luggage was.

“It’s still in Orlando, we think,” James said. “They’re going to ship it up later.”

More than half of all flights in and out of TPA were delayed or canceled on Sunday.

On Saturday, more than two-thirds of all flights in and out of TPA were delayed or canceled.

Many passengers, including Blessed Banks from Houston, were worried about what happened to flights over the weekend and decided to get to the airport early on Monday.

“You never know what’s going on,” Banks said. “It’s Monday especially, it’s going to be busy, the weather, the delays, and all of that so I got here at least two hours before.”

8 On Your Side meteorologists said the weather looked like it was going to be very quiet on Monday in the eastern part of the country. The hope is that the weather won’t further impact travel plans on Monday.

As of 7:30 a.m. Monday, TPA reported 29 delays and 0 cancelations. To check the status of your flight click here.
