Transfer News: Man United Eyes Massive Late Deal

The most dramatic and expensive transfer window in Premier League history has just three days remaining, and there may yet be a few more twists.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool are all on the hunt to considerably strengthen their squads before the August 31 deadline.

Here, Newsweek guides you through all the news and rumors that are swirling around the Premier League with less than 72 hours to go:

Manchester United has been given a major boost over the potential signing of Gareth Bale from Real Madrid, according to Marca. The Spanish newspaper believes the deal for the Welsh forward could happen after Bale was booed last weekend playing for Madrid.

Chelsea is close to confirming two major transfers this morning. According to the BBC, 24-year-old midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to trade north London for west as he completes a move from Arsenal to Stamford Bridge for a fee of around £35 million (about $45 million).

Antonio Conte’s team is also close to completing the deal for Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater, according to the Daily Express, which is likely to be for a fee of around £40 million ($52 million). That would mean Chelsea spending all the money made on Nemanja Matic’s move to Manchester United on the Leicester man.

Liverpool is planning a last-minute £200 million (about $240 million) spending spree, according to the Daily Mail, including the purchase of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool has been trying to sign the 26-year-old Dutch center back since the transfer window opened.

Manchester City is also determined to complete a deal for a center back. Pep Guardiola’s team is preparing a fresh bid for West Brom defender Jonny Evans, according to the Daily Mirror, and ESPN suggests City defender Eliaquim Mangala could be part of the deal.

Swansea has appeared as a surprise, but serious, contender to sign Bayern Munich’s young star midfielder Renato Sanches, according to Wales Online. The 20-year-old midfielder has been tipped to be a future Ballon d’Or winner but is getting little playing time in Munich.

And finally, Crystal Palace looks likely to complete the signing of Liverpool center back Mamadou Sakho in a deal worth around £25 million ($31 million), according to the Daily Mail.
