Train derailment north of Pueblo closes Interstate 25 in both directions

A train derailment north of Pueblo caused a man's death and forced the closure of Interstate 25 in both directions in October 2023.

A train derailment north of Pueblo has caused the closure of Interstate 25 in both directions. Motorists should expect extended closures due to train cars and coal on the interstate, according to a Sunday statement posted to the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, by the Colorado State Patrol.

Photos posted on X by the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office and CSP show several derailed train cars on the interstate and coal spilled across the road. A portion of the railroad bridge over the interstate also appears to have collapsed on top of a semitruck that was under the bridge.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are responding to the scene, according to the PCSO. Information about the status of the truck’s driver and whether any injuries were recorded had not been released as of 6:25 p.m.

Motorists traveling north to Colorado Springs need to exit I-25 at U.S. Highway 50, go west to Penrose and then head north on Highway 115, according to the PCSO. Southbound I-25 motorists traveling to Pueblo should exit at mile marker 110 onto a county road that runs parallel to I-25 and into Pueblo, according to CSP.
