Train Derailment Causes Traffic Headache In Sugar Land

A train derailment in Sugar Land blocked several key railroad crossings along US 90A on Monday, officials said.

SUGAR LAND, TX -- A train derailment along U.S. 90A in Fort Bend County closed down several railroad crossings Monday afternoon. The derailment happened west of Main Street in Sugar Land when the wheels on one of the cars jumped off the tracks.

No one was injured in the derailment and none of the cars overturned. City officials said the train continued for several miles and caused significant damage to concrete and rail ties along US 90A. The engineer stopped the train when he finally realized what had occurred.

The derailment has closed several key crossings, including US 90A and State High 6, which is the busiest crossing in the city. Motorists are advised to use Interstate 69 as an alternate route.

Union Pacific officials expect the crossings to be closed for an extended period while they remove the derailed cars and make repairs.
