GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — When creating a comedic movie centered on cereal rivals, it makes sense to set a film in Battle Creek, which boasts the title of Cereal City.

Jerry Seinfeld’s new film, “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story,” is coming to Netflix on May 3. Viewers can catch a glimpse of the star-studded movie featuring Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Max Greenfield in a trailer Netflix released Thursday.

The movie marks Seinfeld’s feature film directorial debut. According to the streaming platform, “Unfrosted” brings the story of Pop-Tarts’ origin to life as the film portrays the 1963 race between “Kellogg’s and Post, sworn cereal rivals,” to “create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast.” Netflix described it as “a tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar and menacing milkmen.”

While the film shows Kellogg and Post’s competitiveness, Seinfeld explained in a Netflix article that “Unfrosted” isn’t entirely based on true events.

“This really did happen in Battle Creek, Michigan, where Kellogg’s and Post were located, and they did compete to come up with this product,” Seinfeld said. “But the rest of it is complete lunacy.”

Learn about the true origin of Pop-Tarts in this report highlighting the pastry’s inventor, Bill Post of Grand Rapids, upon his death earlier this year.
