New trail construction at 18 Road

FRUITA, Colo. (KREX) — Using grant money from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the City of Fruita has been constructing trails and updating the 18 Road trailhead.

Trails coordinator with Mesa County Public Health, Ross Mittelman tells WesternSlopeNow 32 miles of new trail will be made on top of the 30 miles that already exist.

“Part of that was expanded trails which we have been working on. Calling for 32 miles of new trail out here on top of the 30 miles that already exist. And then some infrastructure improvements that you can see around here. So expanded parking, new bathrooms, extra campgrounds. An event space here and general amenities that will improve the overall visitor experience here.”

So far, crews are about three-quarters of the way completed with trail construction and once that’s finished crews will begin to pave 18 Road. The project is expected to take place sometime later this year.
