‘Tragic and stressful’: Naked, bloody woman walks into Petaluma HS gym

(KRON) — Activities at Petaluma High School were disrupted Tuesday afternoon when a naked, bloodied woman walked into the school gymnasium, the Petaluma Police Department said. The students evacuated the gym and the woman, who police believe was having a mental health crisis, was hospitalized.

Police were first alerted to the situation at 3:05 p.m. when a person who lives on the 100 block of Dana Street called to say a woman was running around a home and breaking items. Shortly afterward, a second call came in to police saying she was headed towards the school, which is located at 201 Fair St.

As she walked into the gym, school staffers worked to help the woman and evacuate the students, according to Petaluma City Schools Superintendent Matthew Harris. First responders arrived seconds after the woman.

“At that time, it was determined that there was no threat to the safety of our students or staff, and lockdown protocols were not warranted,” Harris said.

The woman had several cuts on her body, including a “serious” one on her arm, police said. Officers applied a tourniquet and paramedics took her to a hospital.

“Officers believed the woman was suffering from a mental health crisis in addition to needing immediate medical intervention,” PPD said.

Officers believe the woman sustained the injuries while trying to climb through a window. There are no signs of foul play. Her injuries were not life-threatening and nobody else was injured. School officials described the situation as “tragic and stressful.”

Harris said that some students took pictures and videos of the woman and the blood she left at the scene, which are now circulating on social media.

“These images are now circulating within our larger community on social media and not always accompanied by accurate facts,” he said.

Counseling and mental health teams will be at PHS on Wednesday to support students. School facilities are expected to be cleaned by Tuesday morning.
